Tanja von Behrens

Born and raised in Canberra, Tanja has lived in NSW, the NT and SA. She completed her studies in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design in Tasmania and has shared studio space at Salamanca Arts Centre since 2012. Over time her practice has evolved to connect her love of making by hand with her passion for the environment.

Tanja is often inspired by small moments of peaceful quiet and connection with nature - and is keenly aware of our role in helping to protect and preserve the environment by the choices we make. The textures, colours and forms of the natural world are common in her recent work - which also includes non wearable artworks.

Crafted in Sterling Silver, Copper, Brass, Titanium and - increasingly - remnant materials and found and recycled items, Tanja values materials not only for their perceived financial value - but for their history, and in recognition of their inherent environmental cost. She aims to create work that will be treasured for a long time to come.
