Jan Barker

After years exploring painting and sculpture, Jan discovered jewellery making and found a way to combine form, texture and colour in pieces of portable, wearable art.

Handcrafting her original designs here in Hobart, Jan draws inspiration from the surrounding natural and built environments.  Forms may be suggested by shadows on a wall, new foliage, a shell; textures from patterns in bark, rockpools, or windblown grasses; and colours from clouds at dusk or reflections on water.

A favourite technique combines coloured glass enamels with silver – using colour to embellish a form or to create a focal point, a miniature artwork.  For Jan the aim is to create contemporary designs that express something essential to and for the wearer.
