A contemporary Australian jeweller's artistic journey...
A sea change moment 20 years ago led Megan Dickens to pursue a Diploma of Arts Craft and Design. Although she didn’t initially see it becoming a long-term career or business, she decided to take a leap of faith and explore the possibility.
During her second year of study, a fellow student discovered a small retail outlet available for lease in Kelly’s Lane, managed by Salamanca Arts Centre. Megan and her colleagues presented a business case and successfully secured the lease. Since 2002, she has been part of the group of jewellery artists that transformed it into what is now FIND Contemporary Jewellery Collective.
Megan’s creative process is centred on moments of discovery that occur every time she sits at the bench. While her ideas guide her initial direction, they often evolve in unexpected ways as new possibilities emerge during creation.
Her work is driven by a fascination with pattern, texture, colour, and the interplay between positive and negative space. "The juxtaposition of conflicting elements together... harmony created," she explains. This approach is a defining feature of her jewellery.
She particularly enjoys combining overlaying textures in metal with surface finishes, such as the rich gold earthiness of keum-boo and oxidisation, or pairing the luminosity of pearls with the white satin and textured surfaces of silver.
Ultimately, Megan describes her artistic journey as "purely egocentric, driven by a passion to create and explore the craft of jewellery making."
